A blue jewellery box is suspended so that it is open at the viewer's eye level over a black-painted plinth. On the surface of the plinth a blue plexiglas sheet covers a blue cardstock sheet.
The empty box wavering in mid-air and the absence of an object on the plinth amplify the silence of the "mute" scene suggested by the title.
The same theme was developed in two later variants, made in 1990 (GPO-0663) and in 1994 (GPO-0726), as well as in a later version, conceived in 2006 (GPO-0928).
