Private collection
Three elements featuring white, grey, and black backgrounds, respectively, are placed at short intervals from each other to suggest a room in perspective. The vanishing point of the image at the centre reproduces in a smaller scale the image of the triptych itself. The vanishing lines of the perspective host four valets, stage-hands and discreet witnesses of the rites of the representation. The whole composition is enlivened by the flowing of celestial bodies and astral elements in a symmetrical contrast between light and dark, day and night, as stated in the title.
Second element, background image: view of the entrance hallway of Giulio Paolini’s home taken by Paolo Mussat Sartor, 1991.
