Vertigo, 2020

The ample drape featuring an image of the sky falls to the ground and is associated with a heterogeneous ensemble of objects. These are arranged on the floor on top of several pallets: stretchers and frames, primed canvases, a passepartout, two photographic details of the work Fine, 2016 (GPO-1052) – one of them represents L’Indifférent (1717) by Jean-Antoine Watteau, the other a flag with an image of the sky that stands out against a seascape at dusk – and a photographic canvas which overprints various negative images of solo shows by the artist.
A sort of fatal shipwreck of a stranded vessel with its sails lowered, the work seems to suggest the outcome of the journey that is constantly being undertaken by the artist towards an ideal destination – represented in a symbolic key by the ethereal and ineffable dimension of the sky – albeit aware of the impossibility of landing. Indeed, the work refers to the above-mentioned work entitled Fine, which in paradigmatic terms proposed the inexorable desire to set sail for Cythera – the mythical island where Venus, goddess of Beauty, was born, as well as the artist's route of election – measuring the unbridgeable distance from the destination.
The title alludes to the title of a movie by Alfred Hitchcock (1958), whose main character, Scottie, suffers from vertigo, and in which a woman falls into the void three times.
