The New World
Pencil and collage on paper, gilt frame, sheet of drawing paper
Twenty-three framed parts 34 x 49 cm each, gilt frame 138 x 198 cm, sheet 34 x 49 cm, overall dimensions 314 x 427 cm
Massimo De Carlo, Milan
A large gilt frame with a blank sheet in the middle is surrounded by twenty-three smaller gilt frames, each of which includes a fragment of the reproduction of recent works on paper by the artist, inspired by the eighteenth-century fresco with the same name by Giandomenico Tiepolo.
In the same way that Tiepolo’s The New World keeps from the viewer’s gaze the subject towards which the figures portrayed from behind are turned – the curious crowd is looking at a magic lantern that projects the fanciful images of unknown worlds – Paolini’s The New World guides the gaze to the surface of the blank sheet, which always renews from scratch the expectation of a discovery.
Title from Giandomenico Tiepolo, Il Mondo Nuovo, 1791, detached fresco, 205 x 525 cm, Ca’ Rezzonico, Venice.
