The Temple of Time

Pencil and collage on paper

Three framed parts 72 x 72 cm each, overall dimensions 72 x 222 cm

Signed, titled and dated on the verso of the third element, centre: "Il Tempio del Tempo / Giulio Paolini / 2013-14"

Collection of the artist

The three images, placed at short intervals, each feature a telescopic succession of a circle inscribed in a square, alternately drawn or photographed, black or white, full or empty. In addition to circles and squares outlined in pencil, the face of a clock and the multiplied reproduction of the drawn elevation of a temple alternate in various ways. In the central element of the triptych, the linear circle is punctuated by twelve clocks marking the hours.
In this “Tempio del Tempo” (“Temple of Time”), as the title indicates, time is not the chronological one that marks life or the world, but rather a circular and universal time, in which nothing begins nor ends: it is the time of the work of art, in which past, present and future correspond in the same dimension, extraneous to any evolutionary logic.

Image of the timepiece from Samuel Abraham Goudsmit, Robert Clairborne, Quarta dimensione: tempo (Milan: Arnoldo Mondadori Editore, 1967), p. 8 (”L’ora ufficiale americana”).

2019 Mombarcaro (Cuneo), Lunetta 11, In corso, 22 June - 10 November, no catalogue.
