The reproduction of Filippo de Pisis's painting entitled Conchiglia (Shell, 1933) – applied to a larger sheet of white paper, which in turn is placed in the centre of a sheet of blue paper – converses with a real shell, located at the lower margin of the white sheet. On the blue background, a few freehand strokes continue the horizon line of the pictorial landscape.
The relationship between the painted shell and the real one queries the relationship between copy and original, image and reality, or the very idea of representation, emphasised by the white framing that defines the peculiar dimension of the painting in relation to the reality situated on this side of that insurmountable threshold.
Filippo de Pisis, Conchiglia, 1933, oil on canvas, 40.5 x 58 cm, Private collection (reproduction from De Pisis, exhibition catalogue, Rome, Galleria dell’Oca, 1992, cat. no. 10).
