The perspectival drawing of two successive rooms, outlined on the wall and framed by the doorframe of a closed passageway, includes, in the area corresponding to the vanishing point, a painting, evoked via a square made in pencil – the diagonals are drawn in red, like in Disegno geometrico (1960, GPO-0001) – and a small primed canvas applied to the centre of a crumpled sheet that was previously filled in in black pencil.
The gap, both material and conceptual, between the virtual space of the drawing and the physical one of the doorframe, of the canvas and the crumpled sheet, situated on this side of that inaccessible “room”, is emphasized by the title, in particular by the hyphen between the two parts. At the threshold of the “door” we are asked to measure the distance from that reserved dimension that exclusively belongs to the representation and that, indeed, leaves us at a distance.
The title harkens back to the homonymous group of three variants made in 2000 (GPO-0843, GPO-0844, GPO-0845).
