A Normal Life

Cases, plinth and plexiglas sheet, plexiglas cube with engraved drawing, collage on passepartout, pencil on wall

Fourteen plexiglas cases 31 x 21 cm each, plexiglas plinth 140 x 53 x 53 cm, plexiglas cube 50 x 50 x 50 cm, plexiglas sheet 50 x 50 cm, overall dimensions variable

Collection of the artist

The extension of the work can be reduced (minimum length ca. 420 cm), omitting the horizontal and vertical lines suggesting a room seen in perspective.

2005, Winterthur, Kunstmuseum: the work is limited to the intervention on the wall.
2006, New York, Marian Goodman Gallery: the installation included the plinth and the case.

Fourteen plexiglas cases, arranged at the centre of the wall recalling a large frame, each hold a torn fragment taken from a newspaper, featuring a single letter, so that overall, clockwise from the top, starting with the first letter at the top left, the fragments compose the words in the title. The ensemble of cases is inscribed in the perspective of a room drawn on the wall characterized by a pattern of rectangles of the same size as the cases, and a chair in the foreground. Before the wall, on a transparent plinth, is an empty plexiglas cube with the drawing of a room engraved in its sides.
The cases with the fragments taken from newspapers, the virtual paintings, the chair, and the model of the room represent some elements of the “normal” life of the artist. Always from scratch, in his everyday universe, the artist comes to terms with the attempt to fix in the space of the representation – evoked by way of
the framing and the engraved cube – an unattainable, absolute dimension.
